Playstation 3 - Resolving a Common Issue
Most PS3 owners have experienced the frustration of repeatedly inserting and altering settings in a desperate attempt to have the system function correctly and read
the disk you inserted, whether it be a game or a DVD. I come across this every single time I turn on my PS3, and I've found a few solutions.
1) Turn off media servers in the [Settings] - [Network Settings] section, this is essential
Now, either:
2) Turn off system with disk present inside, lift PS3 an inch off the ground, then drop. Enough to rattle its interior and not obliterate it, dumbass.
3) Turn off system with disk ready in hand, turn on PS3 and as the system starts humming quickly insert the disk, which will most likely begin to rotate.
You may also do both.

Re: Playstation 3 - Resolving a Common Issue
I have a similar problem with my 360. The disk tray doesn't always want to open, so I either punch the front of it, or I lift it like and inch and drop it.
And by the way, thanks for being the first guide!

Actually, a better way of doing this is to slant the PS3 diagonally as the disk is inserted. Then you'll probably hear it start spinning.
- Ain't no way I'm paying $150 to have it fixed -

2. Go to the store and buy a new one
3. Realize you have no money left
