Music Discussion
Talk about your favorite musicians and music here. I suggest listing them then adding their best songs under their name, and at the bottom of your post embedding some music videos.
I am a big fan of classic rock. My favorites:
• David Bowie. People criticized him for making music that follows the trends of the time, but hey, at least he followed the fads right. Some of his more notable songs are Suffragette City, Rebel Rebel, Under Pressure (made w/Queen), and Fame. He is my favorite singer, except of course for Weird Al.
• U2. Wonderful band with great beats. Made the songs Pride (In the Name of Love), Sunday Bloody Sunday, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.
• Van Halen. This band mastered the guitar by making amazing songs like Dancing in the Street, Jump, Hot for Teacher, Panama, Running With the Rebel, and many more. One of their most notable works is Eruption, a two minute or so long song with no vocalizations, merely a very long and pretty solid guitar solo with drums in the background. See the video below, and note that the guitar is fucking SMOKING.
• Tom Petty. Created Free Fallin', Runnin' Down a Dream, You Got Lucky, and many other lightly romantic quick-paced american classic.
• The Cars. By far my favorite band besides Van Halen or The Kinks. Made amazing, AMAZING songs that defined a generation and stressed common sayings of their time. For example, Let the Good Times Roll, Let's Go, Just What I Needed, My Best Friend's Girl, Bye Bye Love, You Might Think, and the moody yet rockin' Moving In Stereo.
• Devo. Contributed to modern day electronica and pop by making rock that lightly touched the former two genres. Their most notable song is Whip It, and their lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh has gone on to compose music scores for many movies and television shows.
• Weird Al. Known for his parodies of popular songs and clever word play. Well-known for Amish Paradise, Like a Surgeon, Dare to be Stupid, UHF (Re-read the title summary), and It's All About the Pentiums, which I know all the words to.
• Foreigner. Good band, made the songs Hot Blooded, Urgent, Head Games, Juke Box Hero, and Feels Like the First Time.
• George Thorogood. Made blues-rock music like Who do You Love?, I Drink Alone, and Bad to the Bone.
• Pink Floyd. Another one of my all-time favorites. Their music isn't really as "depressing" as many people claim it to be. Made wonderful songs like Wish You Were Here, Run Like Hell, and Another Brick in the Wall.
• Elton John. Pianist and vocalist in the 70's and 80's. Made great songs with steady rythyms like Bennie and the Jets, Honky Cat, Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, and his most memorable song; Rocket Man.
• Queen. Created music that generally portrayed lives of troubled individuals like Bohemian Rhapsody and Another One Bites the Dust.
• The Who. Played at the Superbowl halftime show in 2010 and made the songs Who Are You, Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard, Squeeze Box, etc.
• The Rolling Stones. Created many classics in the late 60's and early 70's such as Let's Spend the Night Together, Gimme Shelter (featured on the CoD: Black Ops commercial), Satisfaction, Get Off of My Cloud, Brown Sugar, and my personal favorite; Sympathy for the Devil.
• The Police. That's right, the band Sting originated in. Created the songs Roxanne, Message in a Bottle, and Don't Stand so Close to me.
