I don't use mods so I can't help. Ironic thing is, I don't use mods for the exact reason you implied above; they are frustrating.

I also just checked Notch's Twitter. Ass-load of useful facts and a page-stretching picture there. Added it all to OP.

I would have to agree, but they weren't really bad, they just expanded more on the basics of the game.
Some of the new were ok, but not needed to say the least. I am still satisfied to a comfortable degree though.
